Agile Methodology is simply a way of working (WoW).  A scaling Agile teamwork utilises an iterative approach to delivering value; when done right it helps teams deliver value faster and with fewer headaches. A world class Agile way of working aims to take an end to end view (dubbed a value stream) of all the steps involved in delivering value.  With an end to end perspective, Agile teams plan together, coordinating each team’s work in the end to end value stream.   

Each Agile team can then focus on the best way to deliver value and does so in small, consumable increments every 2 weeks to demonstrate their understanding on how value can be delivered to the customer/stakeholder. 

Improving Agile WoW involves amongst other things, working backwards from the point of value delivery to the customer to measure all the waits and hands-offs and other things that defer or delay the flow of work.  We then look at each to agree how to reduce the wait time thus relentlessly improve all the preceding steps of the value stream. 

An Agile mindset

An Agile mindset once acquired influences how we choose to think and act. 

We deal with uncertainty (the unknown future) by establishing a hypothesis about what value should be delivered. Agile teams then work through several iterations to establish a minimum viable product (MVP) that allows us to prove or disprove the hypothesis. 

This process of regular and frequent informed user feedback, plus the ability to incrementally deliver products, helps stakeholders decide if they are going to invest further in a more complete solution. 

One of the ways an organisation can attain business agility that facilitates high-quality products delivered predictably, sustainably, and rapidly within a changing complex environment, is when an Agile mindset underpinned by Agile ways of working delivers an end to end value stream that has all teams planning their work together.
